On the South face of the Leaf is a piece of stone that has been left raised above the surface of the rest of the block. It is approximately 5 inches across. Petrie concidered it to be a 'Boss' left after quarrying and not important. Other theories conclude that it is an important part of the mechanism to release the portcullis stones.
